2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service Drive Belts for 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: For 3.7L and 4.7L engines, firstly take off the negative battery cable to service the drive belts. It is important to be extra careful when working around the tensioner, as snapping the tensioner arm back to the freearm position would severely damage it. The belt tension is held evenly by a tensioner that works automatically. Twist the belt tensioner until you feel it hit its stop and then remove the belt. After that, slowly move the tensioner into the freearm position. Before fitting a new belt, check the condition of the pulleys and make sure the accessory drive belt is routed correctly to stop the engine from becoming too hot because of improper water pump rotation. Before the tensioner goes into position, place the new belt around all the pulleys besides the idler, pull the tensioner until it stops, put the belt over the idler and seat the tensioner all the way onto the pulleys. After everything is in place, feel for the belt wear indicator; its space from the housing stop shouldn't be greater than 24 mm (0.94 inches) for a 4.7L engine. If observing the measurement goes beyond the given requirements, change the serpentine accessory drive belt.
