2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Van Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace a faulty or damaged driver Air Bag on 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
A: The first thing to do is separate and disconnect the negative battery cable and after around two minutes, the system capacitor should have discharged. Under the steering wheel, take out both of the screws that link the driver air bag to the steering column adjustment handle. While pushing the steering wheel toward you, free the air bag from the front of the steering column to check the wires at the rear side of the unit. Remove the steering wheel wire harness horn switch feed take out connector from the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector set at the back of the driver air bag housing but do not pinch the Clock Spring or damage the connector insulator while doing so. Very carefully grip the connector insulator and pull or pry it to cut free the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire connector from the matching receptacle. If a deployed driver air bag is on the steering wheel, take it off and replace the Clock Spring and the steering column. During installation, attach the driver air bag close to the steering wheel again to reconnect both electrical wires. Place the end of the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire into the front of the air bag inflator connector, listening to an audible signal that shows it is properly connected. Join the steering wheel wire harness horn switch feed take out connector to the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector. Make sure not to pinch the Clock Spring pigtail wire and steering wheel wire harness as you put the driver air bag in the steering wheel. Align the air bag with the steering wheel armature before connecting them with the two screws under the steering wheel and tighten them to 10 N.m (90 in. lbs.) Don't connect the battery negative cable now, because the verification test for the supplemental restraint system should come after service of any supplementary air bag or wiring component.
