2003 Jeep Liberty Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Replace an Automatic Transmission Filter on 2003 Jeep Liberty?
A: Only Mopar ATF +4, Automatic Transmission Fluid, should be used in the transmission while changing its fluid and filter and then change the filter during the next oil change. If you take apart the transmission, replace both the fluid and the filter. You should begin by putting the car on a hoist, placing the drain container under the oil pan below the transmission. Ease the bolts along the pan and hit one end to loosen it, making it easier to let the liquid drain out before you remove the oil pan. Change the old filter and O-ring at the valve body's bottom, tightening the retaining screws firmly to 5 Nm which is 40 in. lbs. Clean up the oil pan and magnet, after which reattach the oil pan using new Mopar Silicone Adhesive, tightening the bolts to 19 Nm (165 in. lbs.). Put four quarts of Mopar ATF +4 in through the dipstick, begin the engine and let it run without moving for at least a minute. After putting your car in park (or neutral), briefly move the selector lever from position to position and back again. Reach the point of transmission fluid level on the dipstick and then make sure to add fluid so it is only about 3 mm (1/8 in.) below the lowest mark on the dipstick. After the transmission cools to normal operating temperature (180°F), recheck the fluid by making sure the dipstick is completely in the tube so no debris will access the transmission.
