2004 Jeep Liberty Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid Pan on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: First, put Mopar ATF +4, Automatic Transmission Fluid, in the transmission sump only and make sure to change the filter when changing the other transmission oils. If you can access the magnet inside the oil pan, rub it clean with a dry, clean cloth and always change the fluid and filter when the transmission is open. On a hoist, raise the vehicle so you can put a container with a big hole underneath the oil pan to catch the oil. Loosen the bolts on the pan and tap one side of the pan to help the fluid drain out before removing the oil pan. Apply a new filter and O-ring at the valve body's bottom and tighten all the retaining screws to 5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). After cleaning the oil pan and magnet, apply new Silicone Adhesive around the groove and put the pan in place, tightening the bolts to 19 Nm (165 in. lbs.). Place four quarts of Mopar ATF +4 inside using the designated dipstick hole, turn the engine on and let it idle for a whole minute. With brakes on, press the selector lever for a short time into each position, finishing in park or neutral. Make sure the transmission fluid is at 3 mm (1/8 in.) below the lowest sign on the dipstick. When the fluid temperature returns to 180°F, lift out the dipstick, wait for it to drain, then reinsert it correctly to keep dirt out of the transmission.
