2003 Jeep Wrangler Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Crankshaft Seal on 2003 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before servicing or repairing the rear crankshaft oil seal, make sure you remove the transmission and flex plate. Pry out the seal carefully with a 3/16 flat bladed screwdriver pressed between the dust lip and the metal crankshaft seal, keeping the blade clear of the seal's top surface and just making contact with the chamfer edge. Before fitting the seal, sand the crankshaft edge at 400 grit to ensure there are no rough spots, so the new seal is not damaged. You do not need any type of lubrication when installing the seal. Lay Special Tool 6926-1 Seal Guide on the crankshaft and have the seal lip facing toward the crankcase while you place the seal over the guide tool. Insert Special Tool 6926-2 into the seal and with C-4171, push the seal firmly into the block without pushing it past flush. Following up by installing the flex plate again, but apply a film of Mopar Lock & Seal Adhesive to the threads and tighten to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) as you reconnect the transmission.
