2003 Jeep Wrangler Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Exhaust Manifold on 2003 Jeep Wrangler?
A: When servicing or repairing the exhaust manifold, lift the vehicle, remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold and then lower it. After that, unplug the upstream oxygen sensor from the rear of the exhaust manifold, unfasten the air cleaner bracket and remove the heat shield. This process starts by removing the bolts on the manifold from the cylinder head and then remove the exhaust manifold. Examine the manifold to make sure it is not damaged. Take off the gasket, if it's used and clean every area of the manifold and the cylinder head. Make sure the gasket surfaces on the manifold are flat by using a straight edge and replacing the manifold when you notice cracks or if the surface is more than 0.15 mm per 300 mm (0.006 inch per foot) from flat. While doing the installation, clean the area between the manifold and engine, install the exhaust manifold with a new gasket and tighten the nuts to 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.). Screw the removed exhaust pipe onto the exhaust manifold, applying a tightness of 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.) and then fit the oxygen sensor. After that, add the heat shield, tightening each bolt to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) and put back the air cleaner bracket.
