2002 Jeep Wrangler Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Exhaust Manifold on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Take the battery ground wire off and drain the cooling system to begin working on the manifold. Lift the car and remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold, afterwards lower the vehicle. To separate the intake manifold, free fasteners 2 through 5, then remove fasteners 1, 6 and 7 for the exhaust manifold. Rub the mating areas on the cylinder head and manifold with solvent, then use compressed air to blow them dry. Search for any cracks in the manifold and ensure the surfaces that come into contact are not more than 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) out of plane using a straight edge. During installation, check that both the intake and the engine exhaust manifolds are free of dirt and that the same condition applies to the cylinder head mating surfaces, to prevent let-in of foreign material. Install the new intake manifold gasket on top of the alignment dowels on the cylinder head, then place and fix the engine exhaust manifold assembly with it so it is centrally located on the end studs and spacer. Secure bolt No. 1 to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque and attach the intake manifold to the cylinder head dowels, then tighten bolts 2 through 5 to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Put new exhaust manifold spacers over the studs in the cylinder head and tighten nuts 6 and 7 to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.) torque. Reattach the intake manifold, lift the vehicle and secure one end of the exhaust pipe to the engine exhaust manifold with 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) torque. Drop the vehicle to the usual height, add coolant to the radiator, rejoin the negative cable on the battery and start the engine to see for any leaks.
