Q: How to Remove and Install a Crankshaft on 2004 Chrysler Concorde?
A: The crankshaft can be removed after you detach the engine and set it up on an engine stand. Get rid of engine oil, remove the oil filter, then the oil pan and oil pick-up tube. After that, remove the bracket for the idler pulley on the accessory drive belt, along with the upper intake manifold, the cylinder head covers and timing chain cover. Get rid of the main timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, oil pump and crankshaft rear oil seal retainer and finally remove the structural windage tray. Turn the crankshaft with a wrench and before you remove the cap on the connecting rod, mark each bearing cap with a permanent ink marker or scribe tool; they can't be swapped. Take care when installing the pistons not to dent the joint faces found on the connecting rod ends. Be careful not to harm the crankshaft runner bearing as you take out the connecting rod caps. After that, get rid of the main bearing cap bolts and tie bolts, then handle the main bearing caps. Be careful when you pull out the crankshaft; it must not scratch the bearing surfaces. Prior to installation, coat the upper main bearing with engine oil so that the crankshaft thrust washer groove side, against the thrust surface on the crankshaft, is uppermost. Pull the crankshaft out a little and fit the front thrust washer, push it in further to fit the rear thrust washer. Put a coat of engine oil on the lower main bearings and set them into place, making sure to oil the bolts on the main bearing cap before you put them in. Screw the main bolts inside the engine to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and then add 1/4 more turn, set up your crankshaft end play, insert the connecting rods and take a side-to-side clearance reading. Secure the windage tray by inserting it, greasing the bolts and tightening to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) and an extra quarter turn. Screw on the main cap tie bolts and tighten to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.), then follow up with the rear crankshaft oil seal retainer and oil seal, the oil pump assembly, crankshaft sprocket, timing chain, timing chain cover, cylinder head covers, idler pulley bracket, oil pick-up tube with O-ring, oil pan, oil filter and oil dipstick tube. At last, connect the engine to the vehicle and make sure the oil level in the crankcase is correct.
