2004 Chrysler Crossfire Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace a Piston in an Engine on 2004 Chrysler Crossfire?
A: Pull out the timing chain before you try to remove and replace the piston. Indicate each connecting rod and its cap and if the pistons have no arrows, add a note to show which way the faces should point. Loosen and remove both the bolts and caps from the connecting rods, then remove the pistons and connecting rods from the engine's upper part on a soft surface to avoid scratches. Verify the piston pins are the same as their pistons and then tear off the snap rings plus pluck out the piston pins once they are removed. Check each reusable piece for harm and alter or replace when required. When inspecting, observe the connecting rods for any bending or twisting, look at the large end and sand out any nicks and burrs with an oil stone. Look at the pin bore on the small end of the rod and check that the wrist pin turns easily inside the piston. Make sure to look at the pistons to find nicks and scuffs and check the grooves where the piston rings rest to find signs of damage. To install, slide the piston onto the connecting rod, drive in the piston pin and install the snap rings. When needed, put in new piston rings, apply light oil to them and load the piston/connecting rod assembly onto a ring compressor. Pull the connecting rod back with the mallet and wooden drift, making sure the oil-drilling section in the bearing shell is attached before using it in the connecting rod. The anti-twist locks from the bearing shells need to fit into the slots found in both the connecting rods and caps. Get the connecting rod caps into position with the marks, add and tighten the bolts in three stages: 5 Nm, 25 Nm and rotate them 90° clockwise. Make sure the engine rotates easily and after that, replace the timing chain.
