2004 Dodge Dakota Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Shifter on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: The first step for servicing or repairing the A/T shifter is to remove the knee blocker and then relax the steering column bolts just enough to let the column be lowered without being taken out. Then, separate the upper and lower shrouds, unplug the overdrive switch wiring, remove the shift cable from the pin while freeing its clip. Unscrew the gear shift lever, extract the pin in the link slot and remove it all from the steering column. To install, hold the lever assembly upright, with the pin in the blocker to stop the slot and use mounting screws tightened to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Attach the screws of the shift lever again, tighten to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), plug the shift cable to its pin after setting the lever in PARK and clip the free end of the cable in its holder. Carefully wire the overdrive switch, slide the upper and lower shrouds into place, fasten the steering column nuts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.) and then reattach the knee blocker.
