2004 Dodge Dakota Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Belt Tensioner on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: For 3.7L and 4.7L engines, the tensioner's indexing tang is on its back and its indexing stop is on the housing. They must be close to each other-about 24 mm (.94 inches) apart-when installing a new belt not used for more than 15 minutes. If the size is not correct, make sure the problem is not a wrong belt size, worn bearings on the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, lose pulleys, crooked accessories or a different belt routing mistake. A worn belt should be changed when the tensioner indexing arrow reaches the lowest tension position. First remove the accessory drive belt and then remove the tensioner assembly from where it is mounted. As spring pressure rises in springtime, do not open up the automatic tensioner; replace it as a whole unit, besides its pulley. After that, remove the pulley bolt and pulley from the tensioner. First, put the pulley and pulley bolt onto the tensioner and tighten the bolt using 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), according to the instructions. Match the indexing slot on the tensioner's back with the cylinder-head bolt, then bolt the two together after reaching 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) of pressure. Afterward, fix the accessory belt drive in place and make certain the belt indexing lines are aligned.
