2005 Dodge Dakota Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain the Belt Tensioner on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Fill the drive belt tensioner on 3.7L or 4.7L engines by checking that the distance between the indexing tang at the back of the tensioner and its indexing stop is approximately 24 millimeters or 0.94 inches if you're installing a new belt. If the set values cannot be followed, there could be a wrong belt, worn bearings with the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, pulleys being loose, incorrect alignment with the engine accessories or the belt being routed in the wrong way. Replace the used belt if the tensioner indexing arrow moves to the last, lowest tension indicator, because there's no more slack to be taken up. Firstly, remove the drive belt and afterward extract the tensioner assembly from where it is bolted. You should not remove the automatic tensioner if you don't want it to spring out, as it only has to be disassembled if removing the main pulley. Take out the pulley bolt and pull the pulley off the tensioner. For installation, put the pulley and its bolt onto the tensioner, secure the bolt with 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque. Fit the indexing slot on the back of the tensioner over the bolt on the front cover, insert and tighten the mounting bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Then, put in the accessory drive belt and confirm that the belt indexing marks match.
