How to Maintain and Repair a 9 1/4 Rear Axle Differential Cover on 2004 Dodge Durango?

Open the differential cover on a 9 1/4 rear axle by starting with the watts link bell crank bolt. Now, get the differential cover bolts out, remove the cover and drain all the fluid. Wash the cover and then seal it with a thin coating of orange Mopar Axle RTV Sealant or an equivalent. If you take longer than 3 to 5 minutes to install the cover, you have to clean it and reapply RTV for it to stick. When the cover is set on top, tighten the bolts by going across in a cross pattern, until you reach 44 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). Insert 2.13 L (4.501 pts.) of gear lubricant by volumetric measurement up to the level of the stop in the fill plug, but don't let the liquid touch the bottom of it. Install the fill hole plug after your previous step. Finally, replace the watts link bell crank bolt by tightening it to 217 Nm (160 ft. lbs.) again, using a new bolt with Loctite or, if new bolts can't be used, simply clean and treat the old bolt with Loctite 242 on the threads.
