2004 Dodge Grand Caravan Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Filter for the 40TE on 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before doing anything else, use a hoist to lift the car, then put a drain container below the transaxle oil pan. Take off both engine crossmember nuts, place a wooden block beneath the jack and use the jack to lift the engine and transmission so you can see the oil pan better. Unscrew the pan bolts, hit one edge to burst the seal and wait for the fluid to drain out before taking out the oil pan. Put a fresh filter and o-ring on the valve body bottom, wash the oil pan and magnet and fit the pan back using new Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant, tightening the bolts to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs.). Pour about four quarts of Mopar ATF +4 into the dipstick opening, turn on the engine and let it run idle for at least one minute. Once you have the brakes on and the car stopped, roll the selector lever to every position and finish it in park or neutral. Dip the stick into the transaxle after the Jeep has been turned off and only if the fluid is less than 3 mm below the lowest mark (1/8 inch), add some fluid and check it again once the Jeep reaches operating temperature (180°F). Make sure the dipstick is fully in place to protect your transaxle from dirt. To use the dipstick tube fluid suction method, wait until the transaxle has heated up, use a proper suction dial, insert it in the dipstick tube locating it at the top of the dipstick and pull up about 20 times to completely drain the oil. When the suction line is removed, add four more quarts of Mopar ATF +4, run the engine and check the fluid level as you did before.
