2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Drive Belt on 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before beginning to service the drive belt on 3.7L and 4.7L engines, first remove the negative battery cable. Care should be taken to prevent the tensioner arm from returning to its free arm position, as this action can cause the tensioner serious damage. An automatic spring-loaded tensioner is responsible for applying proper belt tension and cannot be changed. Rotate the tensioner until you feel it touch its stop, remove the belt and slowly move the tensioner to the free-arm position. Correctly routing the new belt stops the engine from getting too warm due to problems with the water pump. Be sure to inspect all the pulleys in advance. Shape the belt over each pulley piece except for the idler pulley, move the tensioner to the end and then slide the belt over the idler so the tensioner rolls into it. Jam the belt onto the round part of every pulley on the car. After finishing installation, look at the belt wear indicator; for a 4.7L engine, the gap between the tang and the housing stop should not get wider than 24 mm (0.94 inches). If you find that the length of the accessory drive belt is more than the spec, you should change it.
