How to Service a Drive Belt on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?

The first step to changing the drive belt on 3.7L/4.7L engines is to cut off the negative battery terminal. Pull the tensioner into position until it won't move any more, remove the belt and move the tensioner until it is back in the freearm position. Before replacing the belt, inspect the pulleys and arrange the belt around the pump so it doesn't cause the water pump to rotate the wrong way. Wrap the belt around all but the idler pulley, turn the tensioner arm to its outermost position and finally route the belt around the idler to let the tensioner engage it. Check the belt wear indicator too. On 4.7L engines, the gap between the tang and the housing stop must not be more than 24 mm (0.94 inches).
