2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2004 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: When servicing or repairing the rack and pinion, place the front wheels straight ahead, as vehicles with auto transmission generally have no locked shaft for the ignition key cylinder, so you must use a different approach to immobilize the steering system. Secure the steering wheel and obtain as much power steering liquid as you slowly peel off and plug the fluid hoses from the steering device. Remove the bolt holding the pinch clamp in the rack and pinion and slide the shaft free of the gear. Mark the pitman shaft and pitman arm to help with installation. Then remove the pitman arm from the shaft using the supplied Puller C-4150A. Then, remove the three bolts holding the rack and pinion in place and pull out the unit from the vehicle. To set up the rack and pinion, place it on the frame rail and fasten it using the three provided bolts, turning them to 196 Nm (145 ft. lbs.). Place the steering coupler on the gear shaft and install the pinch bolt which you should tighten to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Install the pitman arm next, then secure a washer and retaining nut on the pitman shaft, after which tighten the nut to 305 Nm (225 ft. lbs.). Join the hoses to the rack and pinion, tighten them down to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.), add fluid to the unit and lastly reset the toe and straighten out the steering column.
