How to Service a Drive Belt on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?

When servicing the drive belt on a 5.9L diesel, do not check its tension with a measuring tool, because all belt configurations are adjusted automatically by the belt tensioner. Link the 1/2 inch handle ratchet into the 1/2 inch square slot of the belt tensioner and turn the ratchet clockwise to take pressure off the belt. Begin with the water pump pulley's belt, connecting the grooves and continue to the vehicle to remove the entire thing. Position the accessory drive belt to prevent the water pump from turning the wrong way which can lead to engine overheating; see the Belt Routing Label in the engine compartment. Line the drive belt under every pulley except the water pump pulley, then attach a 1/2 inch ratchet to the tensioner and rotate it clockwise to lower the drive belt on the water pump pulley. Move the tensioner back into position and then take away the ratchet, checking the belt is correctly sitting on all the pulleys.
