2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix the Drive Belt on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before repairing or servicing the drive belt of a 5.9L diesel engine with an automatic tensioner, don't rely on gauges as auto tensioners tighten the belt immediately. If any differences are found between the schematic diagrams and the Belt Routing Label in the engine compartment, use the label to confirm. All configurations, including those with air conditioning, use a spring-loaded automatic belt tensioner for the drive belts. Fasten a 1/2 inch drive-long handle ratchet to the automatic belt tensioner's 1/2 inch square hole and turn it clockwise to loosen the belt. Turn the water pump pulley clockwise and pull the belt off, then pull the belt from the vehicle. Making sure the accessory drive belt is routed properly stops the engine from overheating because of the wrong turn of the water pump. With all pulleys except the water pump pulley covered, lay the drive belt on them and rotate the tensioner with a 1/2 inch ratchet clockwise to place the belt over the water pump pulley. Rotate the tensioner into place again and detach the ratchet, confirming every pulley has the belt resting on it.
