2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The first thing to do when fixing or repairing a 5.9L diesel water pump is remove the battery negative cables and drain the cooling system. Remove the drive belt for the accessories and the bolts that hold the water pump and then wipe down the sealing spot on the cylinder block. Make sure the area where gasket mating parts join is well-cleaned. Test the water pump for cracks and are coolant drops below the vent hole a sign of leaking fluid; if so, check for loose bearings or impeller friction with the pump body and use extra care when replacing the pump. When fitting, set a new O-ring seal around the groove inside the water pump, ensure the weep hole points down and properly tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. Install the belt again, add fluid to the cooling system, hook up the battery connections, start the car and let it run slowly while you check for leaks.
