2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Thermostat Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Thermostat in a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Cool the system, unhook the negative battery cable and repeat with the positive cable to change the engine coolant thermostat. Make sure the coolant is below the thermostat before you start to drain the system and avoid burns. The reusable coolant ought to be poured into a clean tank or tub. Special tool 6094 should be the only one you use on the constant tension system hoses to avoid damaging them as they are mounted or dismounted. Whenever old constant tension clamps are replaced, install the new ones using matching original clamps with matching marks. Remove the clamp on the radiator hose and remove the hose from the thermostat housing, then need to remove the three bolts that attach the water outlet to the cylinder head. Scrub the points where the connector and thermostat will be joined that are in the water outlet and in the thermostat seat groove at the top of the housing. If you find any cuts or nicks along the thermostat seal, change it right away. Put the thermostat in the groove on top of the cylinder, then add the thermostat ring and tighten all the bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). Attach the upper radiator hose, clip it and refill the cooling system. After that, connect the negative cables on the battery. Check for leaks in the cooling system and note whether the thermostat is working as it should.
