2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Thermostat Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Thermostat on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To service the thermostat on a 5.9L diesel engine, remove the negative battery cables, drain the coolant until it's below the thermostat and once the system is cool, release the pressure by opening the radiator draincock to avoid accidental burns. Empty the coolant into a container that is clean and purpose-made for reuse. Handle constant tension hose clamps safely by using the proper clamp tool, number 6094 and if a clamp has to be replaced, only install original equipment measures marked by a letter or number. Release the clamp and hose from the thermostat housing, then disconnect the water outlet conector by removing the three bolts holding it to the cylinder head. Make sure you clean the water outlet connector and the top groove in the thermostat housing. If the seal of the thermostat shows any cuts or nicks, make sure you replace it. Restricting the bolts to a maximum torque of 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.), insert the thermostat and thermostat housing first in the groove of the cylinder head and then place the thermostat housing downwards until it locks into place. Reinstall the radiator upper hose and clamp, fill the cooling system with coolant and restore the battery negative cables. After that, start the engine to identify any leaks if there are any and to check that your engine's thermostat is working correctly.
