    A: Start the service of a 5.9L diesel engine's water pump by removing the battery's negative cables and draining the coolant from the system. Get rid of the accessory drive belt, then remove the three water pump mounting bolts and make sure the cylinder block's water pump surface is not damaged when cleaning the gasket area. Check the housing of the water pump for any cracks, search for leaks at the shaft seal, inspect all bearings and make sure the impeller does not contact either the pump body or the timing chain cover. When you install the pump, put a new O-ring in the groove, mount it with the weep hole at the bottom and tighten the bolts to 24 Nm / 18 ft. lbs. Fit the accessory drive belt, fill up your cooling system, install the battery cables back, then start the engine as it ought to warm up while you check for any leaks.
