2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Crankshaft Seal for the Rear Main Bearing on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Start by undoing the bolts that are securing the inspection cover on the transmission, remove the oil pan, main bearing cap brace and rear main bearing cap (No. 7). Push the upper end of the seal out of its groove and ensure it doesn't scratch the crankshaft or cause any harm to the groove. After that, remove the other end of the seal from the bearing cap. Before beginning, wipe down the crankshaft's seal surface and apply a little engine oil, then do the same with the seal lip. Put the upper seal into the groove in the cylinder block so that the lip points toward the front of the engine. In both cases, dab a Mopar Gasket Maker sealant on the cylinder block and rear bearing cap, making sure the diameter is no more than 3 mm and 2.3 mm, avoiding the seal's lip. Connect the lower seal into the recess of the bearing cap so it is flush with the cylinder block pan rail and then cover the outside curve of the seal with soap and the seal's edge with engine oil. Do not hit the rear main bearing cap more often than twice; instead, tighten all main bearing bolts to 108 Nm. Install the main bearing cap brace onto the engine, tightening its nuts to 47 Nm and then fit the oil pan onto the gasket. Use Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant at all four corners where the rear main bearing cap meets the cylinder block and at the four joints between the cylinder block and the front cover.
