2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install a Piston Ring Set on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: When fitting piston rings, start by wiping out carbon in the ring grooves, remembering to keep oil drain openings and pin bosses clear to avoid removing any metal which could alter ring fit and harm the ring surface. Make sure that the grooves on the piston rings are not damaged by nicks or burrs. Set a feeler gauge tightly between the ring land and the ring, then check if the ring rotates freely. Then stick the ring into the cylinder bore and force it down towards the bottom using an inverted piston, measuring the gap using a feeler gauge between the ends of the ring. Its oil control rings are designed so they can be fitted with either side facing up, so first install the oil rail spacer followed by the side rails. The two compression rings are designed differently and must not be switched; the top ring is marked by a shiny outside and can be fitted with either surface facing up. A slightly beveled cutting on the bottom of the inside edge and a dot on top show up on the second compression ring. First, use the ring installer to insert the second compression ring so that the dot is facing up and then put on the top compression ring. Make sure that all the distance gaps between the rings on the piston are correct: the oil spacer goes in the center of the piston skirt, the top and bottom oil rail gaps should be at opposite ends on the piston pin bore, the No. 2 ring is 180° shifted from the top oil gap and the No. 1 ring is spaced 180° from the No. 2 ring.
