2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Windshield Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Windshield on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The first step to removing the windshield is to take off the inside rear view mirror and the cowl cover. Following that, take out the screws from the windshield side molding on the A-pillar and remove the molding near the top of the windshield. Either use a sharp cold knife to make the cut or use a pneumatic machine if you can, to cut the urethane and remove the windshield from the vehicle. If you open your car's doors or a liftgate after applying urethane, water may get through, so ensure you keep windows open during and after installation. Clean away any old urethane residue along the windshield fence and set support spacers on the bolts or screws at the base of the windshield. Cut away any remaining traces and keep the windshield in the frame, against the spacers, noting its position with marks. Lay the windshield on a work surface with two wood blocks placed 75 cm apart under it. Mopar Glass Cleaner should be used inside the windscreen on a piece of lint-free cloth to clean, followed by cleaning around the edge with a 25 mm wide strip of clear glass primer and a dry lint-free cloth. Now, paint the black-out primer around the edges and bottom, all 25 mm wide, making sure to let it dry for at least three minutes so it doesn't cross over the black frit. Place the windshield spacers under the lower fence, then apply a 16 mm tall and 10 mm wide triangular bead of urethane around the windshield, inside the moldings, with two beads along the bottom. Insert upper molding into the windshield frame and fence primer the area around the opening of the windshield, giving it 18 minutes to dry. If you have an assistant, place the windshield over the frame, making sure the marks at the bottom line up with the spacers and slowly lower the glass down onto the fence as your assistant helps with the top molding. Press the windshield toward the bottom fence spacers so the top molding touches the roof line and let any extra urethane dry before cleaning it with Mopar Super Clean. Attach the windshield side moldings, cover the cowl, put up the wipers and place the inside rear view mirror; then, once the urethane is dry, use water to see if the repair holds.
