2005 Chrysler 300 Timing Chain Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain Tensioner on 2005 Chrysler 300?
A: Before you work on the timing chain tensioner, first unplug the negative battery cable. Take out the cover over the timing chain and ensure the alignment of the timing marks. After that, take out the timing chain tensioner cover and remove the tensioner itself. The timing chain tensioner is a kind of self-adjusting hydraulic device; you must clear out the oil before resetting it. To purge, slide the check ball end of the tensioner into the shallow part of Special Tool 8186 and slowly push down the tensioner until all the oil has been pushed out. After purging, put the cylinder plunger into the deeper end of Special Tool 8186 and press down until you feel the tensioner reset. If no purging took place, use a slight pressure applied with your finger to help unseat the check ball using the center arm pin on Special Tool 8186. Check the tensioner O-ring for any damage and make sure the snap ring is fitted correctly; replace them whenever you see problems. After making sure timing is aligned properly, reset the tensioner before installation. Take another look at the tensioner O-ring and snap ring and change them if required. Attach the tensioner to the head of the engine cylinder where the dowel pin on the tensioner retainer sits in the proper hole in the cylinder head. After inspecting the retaining plate O-ring, select a matching replacement and install both the retaining plate and attaching bolts, tightening everything to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
