2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Drive Belt on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Take off the drive belt splash shield before doing any repairs or service. While holding the tensioner, rotate it with the wrench and as soon as you can, slip the belt off the power steering pulley and release the tension to remove the belt. After that, take out the power steering pump/air conditioning compressor drive belt, dissasemble the pivoted arm with its bolt, nut and adjusting bolt and replace the generator belt. Make sure the belt pulleys are clear of oil, grease and coolants before putting in the drive belt. The Poly-V Belt system needs replacing if the belt is seriously frayed, excessively worn or cracked to the bone, but small cracks in the ribbed area are standard. Do not apply belt dressings or restorers to Poly-V Belts. When installing, confirm that the generator belt is in the right place and all V-grooves are making contact with the pulley V's. Fit the belt and tighten the adjusting bolt to the recommendation shown in the chart. Check the belt tension with Special Tool 8371 and the Drbiii when the engine is stopped. Plug in the tool, put the probe 2.54 cm from the belt, pluck it at least three times and change the way it vibrates until you get the right note. Close the pivot bolt and locking nut to a force of 40 Nm (32 ft. lbs.) and then place the power steering pump/air conditioning compressor drive belt, ensuring it is correctly routed. After that, attach the splash shield for the belt, then look at the marks on the belt to see if they are within the correct interval, corresponding to the mark for a new replacement belt.
