2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Drain the cooling system first, then take out the timing belt, the camshaft sprockets and the rear timing belt cover before servicing or repairing the water pump. After that, loosen the screws on the flange that hold the water pump to the engine and remove the pump. Look for cracks or damage, coolant leaks on the shaft seal, a bearing that does not turn smoothly, impeller rubbing against both the pump body or engine block, signs of a loose or damaged impeller and a loose or damaged sprocket or sprocket flange. Before fitting the O-ring in the groove of the water pump body, lubricate it with Mopar Dielectric Grease to keep coolant from leaking after water pump installation. Mount the pump body to the block and fasten the screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) and watch the pump move smoothly when you turn it by hand. Filling the cooling system and building up pressure to 103 kPa (15 psi) with a pressure tester allows you to check for any leaks in the water pump shaft and O-ring. After that, install the rear timing belt cover and camshaft sprockets and then the timing belt.
