2005 Dodge Dakota Starter Motor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Starter Motor in an Automatic Transmission on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Begin any starter motor service or repair on an automatic transmission car by cutting the negative electrical connection from the battery, then jack up and support the vehicle. To reach the lower starter bolt, remove the bolts on the support bracket at the transmission and separate the bracket slightly if the car has 4WD and a transmission you can take apart. When your car has an automatic transmission, take out the bolts that hold the plate in place. Raise the starter motor further to the front of the vehicle so that the nose of its pinion housing is clear of the housing and the starter is held up safely. Bend the nose of the donor car down and lower the starter motor so that you can take out the nut securing the positive cable harness connector eyelet to the solenoid battery terminal and pull the eyelet from the terminal stud. With the engine off, unplug the positive wire cable from the terminator at the solenoid on the receptacle and also remove the starter motor. To mount the solenoid, join the solenoid wire to the starter, set the battery cable onto its matching part on the solenoid and secure the eyelet nut of the battery cable following specific torque guidelines without letting the starter dangle from the wire. Attach the starter motor to the transmission, place the cooler tube bracket in position if you own an automatic vehicle, fasten both bolts following the manufacturer's instructions and secure the connections. After that, lower the vehicle and link the negative battery cable to the terminal.
