2005 Dodge Durango Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable for the 545RFE Automatic Transmission on 2005 Dodge Durango?
A: The first thing to do for the 545RFE shift cable repair is to move the transmission into PARK and raise the vehicle. On RFE transmission equipped vehicles, pull the cable adjuster out of the mounting bracket after releasing the cable eyelet. Or, on RLE transmission vehicles, do the same once you've released the cable eyelet. Ease the vehicle down and slide out the dash panel insulation pad to see and access where the gearshift cable grommet is attached, then use pliers or your hand to pull the grommet through the wire harness into the dash board. If required, take off any trim covering the steering column to access the gearshift cable and BTSI. Remove the BTSI wiring connector and also take apart the cable at the lower column bracket and gen-1 shift lever pin. As you do this, draw the cable through the hole in the dash panel into the vehicle. Pull the gearshift cable out of the car. Put the gearshift cable end in the correct place in the dash opening, then stick the grommet in that position too. Secure the cable into the bracket in the steering column so the "ears" are in place and then snap the cable's eyelet onto the clutch lever stud. Place the vehicle on weight-bearing points again, move the transmission manual shift lever to PARK and carefully check that the prop shaft is moved so the transmission is in that position as well. Guide the gearshift cable to the bracket on the transmission mount, snap the cable retaining ears into the transmission bracket and snap the cable eyelet onto the manual shift lever ball stud in vehicles with RLE and RFE transmissions. With the vehicle lowered, hold the cable adjuster lock tab and press it until it locks into place, check the range sensor is working and adjust both the cable and BTSI as required.
