2006 Dodge Durango Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Shift Cable on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: Service and fix the shift cable by shifting it and raising the car in Park first. Push the cable eyelet at the transmission manual shift lever away from you and pull the cable adjuster out from the mounting bracket for Rfe transmissions or for Rle equipment, repeat the same procedure but move the cable eyelet away from the mounting bracket. Lower the car, remove the dash insulation pad and then take out the gearshift cable grommet from the dash panel. Lift off the steering column cover if needed, pull off the Btsi wiring, unbolt the gearshift cable from the bracket at the base and the lever and slide the cable out through the dash opening into the vehicle. Pull the gearshift cable out of the car. Start installation by taking the gearshift cable's transmission end and pushing it through the hole in the dash panel, aligning and pulling the cable grommet into its opening. Attach the middle section of the cable to the steering column bracket, then stick the other end into the shift lever ball stud. Slide the vehicle up on ramps, put the transmission manual shifter in the "Park" position and turn the prop shaft to check that the transmission is still in Park. Insert the gearshift cable into the hole on the transmission mounting bracket, snap the cable ears into the place on the transmission and finally snap the cable end onto the ball stud of the manual shift lever for both Rle and Rfe types of transmissions. Bring the vehicle downwards and put the shift cable adjuster lock tab in the down position until it clicks into its place. Test that the transmission range sensor micas functioning and set the gearshift cable and Btsi as required. To confirm the adjustment, start the engine while in Park and Neutral; it should only start there for the adjustment to be proper. A starting engine not in Park or Neutral or one that will not start altogether, could indicate a bad transmission range sensor. While adjusting gears, shift the transmission into Park, unlock the lock tab on the adjustment cable, raise the vehicle and take the cable eye out of the manual shift lever. Check that the lever is in Park and that the park lock is working by trying to turn the propeller shaft. Get the cable eyelet updated to the shift handle, bring the vehicle down, push the cable adjuster downward till it clicks, double-check that the engine switches on in Park and Neutral.
