2005 Dodge Grand Caravan Power Steering Hose Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Hose on a 3.3L/3.8L Engine for Pressure Hose on 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: First, lift the cap off the power steering fluid reservoir and then use a siphon pump to remove as much fluid as you can. Lift the vehicle and take out the front emissions vapor canister. After that, take out the two bolts holding the pressure hose routing clamps to the suspension cradle crossmember and the steel reinforcement. Set an oil drain pan below the car and then release the hose connected to the power steering gear. Unbolt the bracket that holds the pressure hose where it routes into the engine which can be done through a hole in the cradle crossmember and take off the tube nut at the power steering pump to let the hose drop free from the car. Before installation, discard any O-rings from the ends of the new power steering hose and clean the hose ends, power steering pump fitting and steering gear power port with a lint-free towel. Change the worn O-rings on the hose and use a little clean power steering fluid to make the new O-rings slip more easily. During set up, ensure the tube ends remain straight to stop any accidents leading to leaking or problems with flow and leave the hoses out of harm's way. Route the plastic tubing near the back of the engine, staying clear of wrongly bent or kinked parts, then press the hose loose on the fitting for the outward pressure. Attach the pressure hose routing bracket to the engine, tighten the bolt to 23 Nm (200 inches lbs.), then tighten the hose tube nut at the pump outlet fitting to 31 Nm (275 inches lbs.). Feeding the hose to the back of the cradle crossmember, make sure the hose end goes into the gear port and do not tighten it yet. Route the hose through the suspension cradle crossmember and steel reinforcement, then retain it using the two routing clamps and bolts, making sure the one clamp at the steel ends at 11 Nm (100 inch lbs.) while the other reaches 23 Nm (200 inch lbs.). Make sure the hose tube nut at the power steering gear port is tightened to 31 Nm (275 inch lbs.), put back the front emissions vapor canister, lower the vehicle, follow the power steering pump initial operation procedure to fill and bleed the system and look for leaks.
