Q: How to Remove and Replace a Camshaft on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: First, you should secure the negative battery cable, disconnect the positive cable and move the battery to remove and exchage the camshaft. After that, unplug the battery wire from the IAT sensor, disconnect the air duct at the throttle body, remove the throttle cables, TPS and IAC connectors and cut the make-up air hose from the air cleaner housing. Disconnect the air cleaner from its housing, as well as the battery tray, then lift off the front timing belt cover, timing belt and its tensioner. Uninstall the camshaft sprocket and rear timing belt cover and pull out the cylinder head cover. Mark each rocker arm assembly so you can put it back in the correct spot, get rid of those assemblies and pump out the cooling system above the heater hose. Unplug the ECT sensor wiring left side cooling system and hoses from the heater supply and return tubes and afterwards, take out the rear bolts holding the bracket of the heater tube. Take out the PDC screws, then place the cylinder block higher to conveniently remove the camshaft, sensor and target magnet. Ensure the camshaft is removed far enough from the rear of the cylinder head to give space for the heater tubes and PDC, then remove the camshaft seal. Rinse the camshaft in a suitable fluid and search the bearing journals of the camshaft for any notable issues or tight spots. Look for wear and damages on the cam lobe and bearing areas. If the camshaft is defective, replace it and if the actual lobe wear is more than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) or the wear limit of 0.254 mm (0.010 inch), replace the camshaft too. During installation, oil the camshaft journals and position the PDC and heater tubes so the camshaft can be carefully set into the cylinder head. Tighten the camshaft target magnet to the end of the camshaft using 3.4 Nm (30 inch lbs.) of torque and then mount the camshaft position sensor on the rear. Before fitting the camshaft seal, check the camshaft end-play and fasten the rear timing belt cover and the camshaft sprocket on the shaft. Remember to tighten the sprocket bolt by hand. Fasten the sprocket bolts, with Special Tools C-4687 supporting them, after tightening the retaining bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) using modified Adaptor C-4687-1. The order of installation should be the timing belt and tensioner/bracket, the front timing belt cover, the rocker arm and shaft assemblies and finally the cylinder head cover. Fix the ignition coil to the bracket, tighten its screws to 12 Nm force (105 inch lbs.), then install the bracket for the heater tube, connect the heater hoses to the heater tubes and reattach the ECT electrical connector. Then, put the PDC screws in place, place the battery tray, attach the air cleaner and join the air duct to the throttle body.
