2005 Dodge Neon CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a CV Boot on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: To remove the inner CV boot, take the halfshaft assembly off the car, but be careful not to handle the interconnecting shaft to protect the sealing boots in the inboard joints. The large boot clamp at the inner tripod can be discarded first and then the small clamp located on the interconnecting shaft. Carefully take off the sealing boot from the tripod housing and slide it down the central shaft; while doing this, make certain the rollers are maintained in their spots on the trunions. Now, pop open the snap ring keeping the spider assembly on the shaft and separate the assembly, if it's difficult, use a brass drift. Visually examine the spider assembly, tripod housing and the interconnecting shaft to determine if there are any areas of wear; if so, the whole halfshaft must be changed. Install the new boot in a way that the new material mirrors the original: silicone rubber for areas with higher temperatures and Hytrel plastic for standard uses. Slide the retaining clamp on top of the interconnecting shaft, then join the replacement sealing boot by placing its raised side into the groove on the shaft. Attach the spider assembly to the connecting shaft, so its chamfer points toward the shaft and insert it with a tap. Put the snap ring into place to lock the spider assembly securely. Half of the grease from the service packaging should be applied inside the tripod and the other half inside the sealing boot. Over the spider and its shaft, secure the tripod housing. Then, alike on all sides, tighten the inner tripod joint seal boot clamp. Clamp the sealing boot onto the interconnecting shaft with crimper Special Tool C-4975-A to prevent the seal from being dimpled or stretched. To vent the inner tripod joint assembly, slide a trim stick into the gap between the tripod joint and the boot, being careful not to harm the boot. Put the inner tripod joint onto the halfshaft to get the right length for the sealing boot, then take out the trim stick. Finally, use the right method for your boot clamp-crimp type with Special Tool C-4975-A for Standard Boot or low profile latching type with Snap-On (R) YA3050 for Low Profile Boot-and secure the sealing boot to the tripod joint. Then place the halfshaft back on the vehicle.
