2005 Dodge Neon Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install an Axle Shaft on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: Remove the battery negative cable, put the transaxle in gated park and raise the car on a hoist. After removing the wheel and tire, take out the halfshaft to hub cotter pin, nut lock, wave washer and hub nut. When you have ABS, release the front wheel speed sensor and set the harness out of sight. With care for the ball joint seal, take the nut and bolt out to detach the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle by prying down on the lower control arm. Don't touch the inner CN joint and use support for the halfshaft as you take it out. Pull the knuckle out of the steering knuckle by applying pressure to the halfshaft with one hand and pulling on the knuckle with the other, using Puller 1026 when required. Pull the inner tripod joints out of the transaxle by breaking the retaining ring with a punch while pulling the sides of the joints away from the gear. Remove the inner tripod joint off the transaxle side gear and oil seal and make certain none of the parts touch the sealing lip. Clean and oil the sealing area of the tripod spline, apply light oil to it and set the tripod joint handle into the back of the transaxle side gear by handslowly, checking the snap ring is completely installed. Remove any debris from the outside of the constant velocity (C/V) joint and the steering knuckle before sliding the halfshaft into the front hub and then attaching the steering knuckle to the ball joint stud. Connect the new ball joint to the upper steering knuckle stud bolt and nut, tighten the bolt to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) and then clean the inner threads of the halfshaft outer stub axle before screwing in the hub nut to 244 Nm (180 ft. lbs.). Save the front wheel and tire assembly, locking the lug nuts to 128 Nm (95 ft. lbs.), determine the fluid level in the transaxle assembly, bring the vehicle down and attach the battery negative cable.
