2005 Dodge Neon Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Drive Belt on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: To fix or repair the drive belt, rotate the belt tensioner with a 17 mm wrench, making it move right, then slide the belt off of the power steering pump's pulley; afterwards, carefully release the tension in the spring. Then, take out the drive belt from the engine. Start by removing the drive belt from the power steering pump/air conditioner, next untighten the generator nut and finally lift the vehicle up with a hoist. Take out the accessory drive belt splash shield, relax the pivot bolt on the generator and once it's loose, ease the adjusting bolt on the generator until the belt can be removed. Remove all types of foreign matter from the belt pulley grooves and clean them of oil, grease and coolants before putting on the drive belt. Check the belt for serious wear, loose strands or shiny spots near the rim; only tiny cracks across the ribbed side are good, but all parallel cracks are regarded as bad. While installing the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor belt, position it above all pulleys except the power steering one, tighten the belt tensioner clockwise and then insert the belt onto the power steering pulley and let go of the spring tension. Once you've installed the belt, check to see that the marks on the belt are within the correct range. Around the pulleys, attach the generator belt and secure the tension with the adjusting bolt to the numbers in the Drive Belt Tension Chart. Use Special Tool 8371 - Belt Tension Gauge Adapter and the Drbiii to guide you through checking the belt tension when the engine is paused. Attach the sensor, place the microphone craft near the belt, pluck the belt and set the tension until you get the expected frequency. Then, tighten the generator pivot bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.), attach the belt splash shield, lower the car, tighten the locking nut on the generator to 54 Nm and set the power steering pump/air conditioning compressor belt in place.
