2005 Dodge Neon Rod Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Rod Bearings on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: Check the clearance of the connecting rod bearings, using Plastigage and then compare it to the Engine Specifications for the right clearance. The rod bearing bolts must be replaced each time the engine is removed. Once new bolts are picked, cover their threads with clean engine oil before you tighten them. Install all bolts just tight enough by finger so that they are each somewhat loose and then tightly torque them one after another to finish the cap assembly. First, tighten the bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.), then finish tightening the connecting rod bolts by turning them 1/4 TURN without a torque wrench. Once more, examine the connecting rod side by using a feeler gauge to verify that there is the correct gap as stated in the manual.
