Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Cover on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: The process to change the timing belt cover starts with taking off the negative terminal from the battery, unplugging the ground strap from the engine mount bracket and taking out the upper torque strut and belt for the steering and air conditioning compressor. Set the vehicle on the hoist and remove the splash shield from the accessory drive belt, the generator drive belt, the crankshaft damper and the lower torque strut, then let the vehicle down. Place a jack under the engine to support it, then take out the bolt securing the right engine mount to engine mount bracket and turn the engine down enough to remove the lower engine mount bracket bolt. Bring up the engine so that the steering pump lines are clear of the bracket, then remove the pump assembly without disconnecting anything. Get rid of the final bolts securing the engine mount bracket to the engine and lift off the front timing belt cover. Then, get rid of the front timing belt cover, timing belt and timing belt tensioner or bracket assembly. Clamp the Special Tools C-4687 and modified Adaptor C-4687-1 onto the camshaft sprocket, unscrew its holding bolt, take off the sprocket and the rear cover bolts to take out the rear cover. When setting up the rear cover, tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.), followed by the installing the camshaft sprocket without using torque wrenches so it will not damage the camshaft timing pin, then tighten its retaining bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). Assemble the timing belt tensioner/bracket, the timing belt and the front timing belt cover, then secure the latter to 12 Nm or 105 inch lbs. Attach the engine mount bracket in its position and manually turn on the upper two bolts, then lift the engine and tighten the bottom engine mount bracket bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Elevate the engine one more time to fix the upper engine mount bracket bolts at 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), install the power steering pump assembly, lower the engine and fit the right engine mount to engine mount bracket through bolt, tightening it at 118 Nm (87 ft. lbs.). Lift the vehicle up with the hoist after removing the jack and attach the lower torque strut, crankshaft damper, accessory drive belts and accessory drive belt splash shield at that stage. After that, fit the upper torque strut, fasten the ground strap at the engine mount, link the negative battery cable once more and go through the torque strut adjustment process.
