2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove the Left Camshaft on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you remove the left camshaft, double-check that the timing chain has been safely released since pushing the camshafts or crankshaft aside can do serious harm. Put Special Tool 8379 in place to protect the ratchet from tensioning too far when you remove the cam sprocket, timing chains or camshaft. The first thing to do is uncover the cylinder head and bring the engine to TDC on cylinder #1, so the camshaft sprocket V6 marks are aligned with 12 o'clock. Mark one link on the secondary timing chain next to the V6 mark on both sides to use during installation. Do not contact the camshaft target wheel to keep it from being damaged. Call your mechanic to perform this part for you, leaving the bolt firm yet loose and making sure the tensioners keep the timing chain from extending. Place Special Tool 8379 between the timing chain and tap it to hold the chain against the tensioner and guide. Grab the camshaft using Special Tool 8428 as you unscrew and remove the sprocket bolt and the sprocket. With Special Tool 8428 still installed, turn the camshaft 5° clockwise to its neutral position. Tighten the camshaft bearing caps' bolts in half-turn increments until the camshaft breather holes are free of all pressure, do not strike or prod the caps to keep them undamaged. First, label the rocker arms, next remove the bearing caps and lastly remove the camshaft. When installing, first oil the camshaft journals and put the left camshaft so its sprocket's dowel is at the 1 o'clock position to make it easier. Insert the camshaft into the cylinder head and fasten the bearing cap retaining bolts in number order from the front toward the back, so the arrows are facing the front. Take 1/2 turns for each bolt, beginning with the middle cap and tighten them to 11 Nm (100 inch lbs.). Line up the camshaft gear with the timing chain, matching the V6 mark in the chain with the two marks in the chain and turn the camshaft with Special Tool 8428 until its dowel is in the same slot as the sprocket. Set the sprocket onto the camshaft and take off any extra oil from the bolt so it doesn't get over-torqued, then secure it with the handheld retaining bolt. After removing the wedge for the timing chain, tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) using Special Tool 6958 as well as adapter pins 8346 and then pour the cylinder head cover into place.
