2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Drive Shaft on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Place the vehicle on a hoist in neutral and make sure it is centered before working on the rear propeller shaft. For reference during installation, mark the sides of the pinion flange or yoke and the propeller shaft flange or yoke and if there's a center bearing in the crossmember, mark its center too. Remove the center bearing mounting nuts first, if they apply, then remove the pinion flange or yoke clamp bolts. Slide the propeller shaft into the transmission and mark both the shaft and transmission for installation, then remove the shaft again. During installation, put the slip yoke over the transmission or transfer case output shaft so the marks line up. If the center bearing is part of your equipment, set it up on the crossmember and tighten the nuts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Place the marks on both the propeller shaft and pinion flange or pinion yoke and then fit new companion flange bolts, tightening them to 15 Nm (85 ft. lbs.). The last step is to change the yoke clamp bolts and tighten them to a torque of 29 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). If you have new bolts, use them and also put a Loctite patch on the companion flange.
