2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Front Disc Brake Caliper on 2005 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: When servicing or fixing a front disc brake caliper, lift and support the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel and access the caliper. Tighten the caliper unit, remove the banjo bolt and keep the washer and get rid of the caliper slide bolts to let the caliper detach. Take the brake fluid out of the caliper and then place a C-clamp together with a block of wood over one piston. Add a padded piece of wood in front of the other to cover and protect it as you remove it. Spray low-pressure air through the caliper brake hose for a short time to eject the first piston and make sure to stop all air pressure when it starts to move, as a strong flow of air can crack the piston. Take the C-clamp and seal the bore once the first piston is out. Then work on the second piston separately. Give attention not to scratch the bore as you carefully pry away the piston dust boots and seals. Examine the pistons because any cracks or scratches can cause problems and keep in mind to use the same kind if you change them. Use a brake hone to polish the bore if it has only minor imperfections, but replace the caliper if the bore has serious damage. Before assembling the caliper, clean and let it dry, pipette brake fluid on the pistons, seals and bores and fit each caliper with a new sealing piston. Install the dust boots as advised and then slide each piston straight into the caliper bore. Connect handle C-4171 and installer C-3716-A before you install the dust boot. Apply Mopar(R) brake grease or Dow Corning 807 grease to the caliper mounting bolt bushings and boot seals and then set the boot seals and bushings in place. Fit the caliper back, make sure a fresh copper washer is on the banjo bolt and tighten to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Tighten the slide pin bolts on the calipers to 32 Nm (24 ft.lbs.), bleed the brakes, mount the tire and wheel assembly and set the vehicle back on the ground.
