2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Brake Calipers on Light Duty Front Brakes on 2006 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: First, raise and secure the vehicle and afterwards, take off the tire and wheel assembly to service the LD front brake calipers. Press down on the disc brake caliper, remove the banjo bolt, remove the copper washers as well, take out the slide pin bolts and pull the caliper off the caliper adapter. Take out the slide pins from the adapter's slide side. Take out the brake fluid from the caliper, then loop a C-clamp with a wood block over one piston and cover the other with a soft piece of wood before removing it. Pull out the first caliper piston by using quick puffs of low pressure on the brake hose line, so that you don't apply too much pressure and crack the piston. Pull out the first piston, put a C-clamp and block of wood over the empty bore and air out the second piston as you did for the first one. Slide out the piston dust boots and, without scratching the bore, remove the lip seal with a pick before extracting the piston seals. Before assembly, brush off dirt and dust, let the area dry if wet, put clean brake fluid on the pistons, piston seals and caliper bores and slide new seals into the calipers. Put the dust boot over the piston, so the lip comes before the piston, press the lip into the groove with the proper tool and then push the piston into the bore using tool C3716-A with C-4171 Handle. Make sure the bellows in the dust boot are not filled with air. Don't put petroleum-based grease on rubber parts during installation, clean all slide pin bores and either use the grease in the packet or Dow Corning-8079 grease. Apply the new slide pin to every surface, join the boot to the slide pin and slide it into the adapter. You will expel any air that is trapped. Place a fresh copper washer on the banjo bolt, connect the disc brake caliper to the adapter and screw on the banjo bolt with new copper washes until you reach 28 Nm. Connect the slide pin bolts in the calipers with 32 Nm of tightening force, run a brake system bleed, fit the wheel and tire back on and lower the vehicle.
