2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service a Brake Light Switch on 2005 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before servicing the brake light switch, turn off the supplemental restraint system by removing and isolating the negative battery cable and then allow two minutes for the system capacitor to drain so the air bag won't accidentally deploy later. Find the switch for the brake lamp on the lower steering column close to where the support bracket is, separate the wire harness from it and move the housing to the right so the tabs on its collar fit into the hole in the bracket. Unscrew the switch all the way back until it comes out, as the self-adjusting switch zap can only adjust one time, so you need to use a new switch. To install, press and hold the brake pedal, place the new brake lamp switch locking collar against the keyed hole in the bracket and push the collar tabs until the entire switch is securely on. Rotate the handle of the brakes switch counterclockwise until the tabs grab the bracket, but make sure you do not pull up on the brake pedal while making the switch change. Without pulling the brake pedal up, turn the plunger adjustment release lever clockwise until it is locked in place and is even with the brake lamp switch connector receptacle. After setting this last adjustment, the plunger length is locked and cannot change; improperly setting it means a new brake lamp switch must be put in. After that, put the wire harness connector back on the brake lamp switch and secure the battery negative cable.
