2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Dimmer Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Dimmer Switch on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The first thing to do is disable the supplemental restraint system by removing the negative battery cable and waiting for two minutes, so that the system capacitor empties itself. At the beginning, take out the driver air bag from the steering wheel and disengage all wire harness connectors from their upper Clock Spring connector locations. Once the puller screws are tight, take out the steering wheel from the steering column so it doesn't damage the Clock Spring. Hold the tilt steering column knob securely and drag it straight to the back to take it off the tilt adjuster lever. Beneath the steering column, unscrew the two outside screws connecting the upper and lower shrouds, then push in the sides of the upper shroud to release it from the snaps. Start by unscrewing the pulley out of the center of the steering wheel, then pull down the upper shroud and remove the lower shroud. Detach the wire harness connector from the back of the multi-function switch housing and remove the two screws keeping the switch connected to its mounting housing. Remove the switch by pulling the switch control stalk towards the left side of the car. Slide the switch into the mounting area, push the alignment pins in, connect the two screws and tighten them to 2 N.m or 20 in.lbs. Attach the wire harness connector to the switch box in the back, mount the lower shroud over the steering column and turn and tighten the center screw 2 N.m (20 in.lbs.). First attach the upper shroud to the lower shroud around the shift lever, pushing the shift lever's gap hider into place if you are using an automatic car, then snap and squeeze to secure the shroud. Trailer your boots tightly with two outboard screws at a torque setting of 2 N.m (20 in.lbs.), arrange the tilt steering column knob evenly with the tilt adjustment handle and snap the column knob in place. Place the pink rubber boot onto the white steering wheel attachment, spot the stud through the middle of the clock spring rotor, press the steering wheel in place and connect the wire harnesses. After that, insert the air bag driver back onto the steering wheel and restore the negative connection to the battery.
