- Q: How to Safely Service and Repair a Front Outboard Seat Belt in a Quad Cab on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?A: A switch to turn on the locking mechanism is included on the passenger's side seat belt retractor on all models. It is necessary to disable the supplemental restraint system when you service any of the steering wheel, steering column, air bag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel components for safety. Remove the negative battery cable and allow the system capacitor to discharge for two minutes. Go through all seat belts, buckles, brackets, tether straps, anchors and retractors to see they are fastened securely without any damage, as well as ensuring cut, frayed or torn belts are replaced. For changing out a front outboard seat belt and retractor unit with a seat belt tensioner, do these things: Move the front seat forward to access the lower seat anchor and B-pillar trim, disconnect the battery negative cable and let it rest for two minutes. Stand on the lower position while taking the screw from the lower anchor under the floor panel. Loosen the front outboard seat belt turning loop screw by unsnapping and taking out the trim cover, then remove the loop. Remove the outer and inner trim from the inner B-pillar, take out the screw securing the seat belt web guide to the pillar and take off the web guide. Cut the seat belt tensioner pigtail wire and take out the screw holding the lower retractor bracket in place. Pull off the upper retractor bracket's hooks and remove the seat belt and retractor from the installation hole. Set the new seat belt and retractor into the hole, make sure the hooks click together and tighten the lower retractor bracket screw to 40 N.m. Attach the pigtail connector, slide in the wire retainer and align the web guide, fastening the screw to 2 N.m. Then add the upper and lower trim, attach the seat belt turning loop onto the height adjuster and tighten the screw to 40 N.m. The loop will hold the new trim cover which should be snapped into position. Insert the lower seat belt anchor and fast Wait to attach the negative battery cable until the verification test for the supplemental restraint system is done after any service is completed. Always return the front seat to how it was before.
