2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Locate, Remove, and Install the Camshaft Position Sensor on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) in the 5.9L diesel engine is fitted beneath the fuel pump and mounts to the rear of the timing gear housing. First, unplug the electrical connector at the CMP sensor and next, unscrew the sensor mounting bolt. With care, twist the sensor away from the housing that contains the timing gears and check the condition of the sensor O-ring. Before assembly, work the oil into the O-ring with your fingers, remove any leftovers in the back hole of the timing gear housing, place the sensor in and making sure to not twist it while inserting it into place to prevent O-ring damage. Attach the sensor to the back of the timing gear housing so it is flush before putting on the bolt to stop any damage to the mounting tang. Following this, add in the mounting bolt and use the Torque Specifications to tighten it correctly and next link the electrical connection to the sensor.
