2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Clock Spring Parts and Q&A
Q: How Does Clock Spring Ensure Safe Installation of a Replacement Steering Control Module on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Do not attempt work on the steering wheel, steering column, air bag, occupant classification system, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel until the supplemental restraint system is disabled in vehicles with air bags. First, take out the negative (ground) cable from the battery, wait two minutes and then carry on. A replacement Steering Control Module (SCM) should be shipped with the Clock Spring centering and the molded plastic locking pin in place; if this pin is taken out too early, the Clock Spring must be re-centered. Make sure the steering wheel is turned all the way so the front wheels face straight ahead. Hold the Steering Control Module (SCM) in the orientation it needs to be installed and with the other hand rotate the Clock Spring rotor clockwise until it stops moving. Move the rotor about two and a half turns to the counterclockwise position to make sure the air bag pigtail wires and their receptacles are up at the top and aligned with the holes for the Clock Spring locking pin. The Clock Spring is now in the middle; connect the Clock Spring rotor to the SCM case so that it doesn't shift before you reinstall the SCM on the steering column. Now, adjust the front wheels to be straight ahead and re-fit the SCM onto the column.
