2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Bag Control Module Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely and Correctly Service the Air Bag Control Module on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Start by turning off the supplemental restraint system by disconnecting and separating the battery negative cable and afterwards wait two minutes to let the system capacitor discharge. Don't strike or drop the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC), as this may break the impact sensor and affect proper calibration; if the ORC falls, you must discard it and replace it. When a vehicle is equipped with the Occupant Classification System (OCS), avoid replacing the Organic Reaction Cell (ORC) and Occupant Classification Module (OCM) at the same time to prevent the problem from occurring permanently. Both kinds of ORCs have particular receptacles on them; black for those with optional side curtain air bags and gray for vehicles without them. Unplug the battery negative cable, detach the center console, cut the connector wires to the ORC at the instrument panel and body harness and remove the three mounting screws. Fix the ORC onto the mount by setting the arrow pointing frontward, flush with the mount and use three screws tightened to 14 N.m (10 ft. lbs.). Join the pieces of wire harness together, confirm the latches and red CPA locks are fastened and install the center console before reconnecting the negative terminal on the battery after a supplemental restraint system inspection.
