If the Clock Spring is wrong or damaged or the driver side
Air Bag has been set off, you must change it, since it cannot be restored. Before working on the air bag system, remove and separate the battery's negative cable, then wait two minutes to let the capacitor empty before the air bag deploys mistakenly. Hold the front wheels straight and then take the driver side air bag module from the
Steering Wheel. Pull the steering wheel wire harness connector out of the upper Clock Spring connector receptacle found between the two upper spokes of the armature inside the steering wheel hub. Detach the nut that fixes the steering wheel armature to the upper shaft, then pull the steering wheel from the upper shaft using Special Tool C-3894-A, making certain the puller jaws are in the pockets of the steering wheel armature. After that, unscrew the screw securing the lower region of the shroud to the multifunction switch housing, pull the two shroud parts apart and remove the wires from the lower Clock Spring ports. Take out the two screws that hold the Clock Spring case to the multi-function switch mounting housing and carefully remove the Clock Spring hub from the shaft above the steering column. Make sure the Clock Spring is in the center before proceeding, since replacement Clock Springs have a locking pin that shouldn't be removed until everything is installed. Even though the front wheels are straight, slide the Clock Spring down the steering column upper shaft, lining up the three pins and check that the oblong pin fits into the right hole in the cancelling cam mount. Match the Clock Spring case to the multi-function switch mounting housing, attach the two mounting screws until they display 2.5 Nm (22 in. lbs.) and plug back in the panel wire connections. Place the lower shroud under the steering wheel and bolt it into position, then snap the upper shroud halves after inserting the
Hazard Warning Switch button. Join the steering wheel onto the upper shaft, making sure the splines are lined up and push the Clock Spring wire harness through the hole between the upper spokes. Screw the steering wheel mounting nut snugly to 47 Nm (420 in. lbs.), be sure not to pinch any wiring, attach the steering wheel wire harness connector and then place the driver side air bag module onto the steering wheel.
